How to Change Your WordPress Site’s Domain Name

This guide explains the correct process for changing your WordPress site’s domain on WPCloud. The change requires server-side adjustments and database updates performed by our technical teams.

Prerequisites

  • Active WPCloud hosting account
  • Ownership/control of the new domain
  • Access to the DNS for that domain

Important Warnings

Critical: Do not attempt to change domain or URLs yourself. This includes editing WordPress URL settings or running database search/replace tools.

Common Issues & Solutions

  • Issue: Domain was pointed to the server before approval
    • Solution: Revert DNS until we confirm the change.
    • Impact: Premature pointing can trigger firewall blocks.
  • Issue: WordPress settings were changed manually
    • Solution: Contact Support immediately for assistance.
    • Impact: May cause site accessibility issues.

What Not to Do

  1. Don’t modify WordPress Site URL/Home URL in wp-admin.
  2. Don’t update DNS records prematurely.
  3. Don’t attempt database search/replace yourself.
  4. Don’t assume the change is instant.

Scheduling Notes

  • Migration work is performed in assigned slots and processed first-come, first-served.
  • Standard processing time: 24–48 hours.
  • Emergency requests may require additional fees.

Post-Change Verification

After DNS is updated and propagation begins, verify:

  1. The site loads correctly on the new domain.
  2. Internal links are working.
  3. Forms, logins, and other key functions work.
  4. Browser cache is cleared before testing.

Old Domain Management

  • Redirect all traffic from the old domain to the new domain.
  • Helps preserve SEO and existing bookmarks.
  • Redirect types:
    • 301 Permanent Redirect (recommended for SEO)
    • 302 Temporary Redirect

Option B: No forwarding

  • Old domain stops working.
  • Potential traffic loss and broken bookmarks.
  • Possible SEO impact.

Implementation choices

  • WPCloud management: We can configure and manage the forwarding (old domain remains in our system; additional fees may apply).
  • Self-management: You can configure forwarding at your domain registrar (no additional hosting fees).
