This guide explains the correct process for changing your WordPress site’s domain on WPCloud. The change requires server-side adjustments and database updates performed by our technical teams.
Prerequisites
- Active WPCloud hosting account
- Ownership/control of the new domain
- Access to the DNS for that domain
Important Warnings
Critical: Do not attempt to change domain or URLs yourself. This includes editing WordPress URL settings or running database search/replace tools.
Step-by-Step Process
1) Submit a change request
Open a ticket at support.wpcloud.ca and include:
- Current domain name
- New domain name
- Preferred timeline
2) Await confirmation
- Our team reviews your request.
- You’ll receive scheduling confirmation and a time slot from the migration team.
- Typical scheduling window: 24–48 hours.
3) During the change
- Server team configures the new domain.
- Migration team performs the required database search/replace.
- Typical duration: 15–30 minutes.
- Brief downtime may occur.
4) After the change
- You’ll receive confirmation when the work is complete.
- Only then should you update your domain’s DNS records to point to the new domain.
Common Issues & Solutions
- Issue: Domain was pointed to the server before approval
- Solution: Revert DNS until we confirm the change.
- Impact: Premature pointing can trigger firewall blocks.
- Issue: WordPress settings were changed manually
- Solution: Contact Support immediately for assistance.
- Impact: May cause site accessibility issues.
What Not to Do
- Don’t modify WordPress Site URL/Home URL in wp-admin.
- Don’t update DNS records prematurely.
- Don’t attempt database search/replace yourself.
- Don’t assume the change is instant.
Scheduling Notes
- Migration work is performed in assigned slots and processed first-come, first-served.
- Standard processing time: 24–48 hours.
- Emergency requests may require additional fees.
Post-Change Verification
After DNS is updated and propagation begins, verify:
- The site loads correctly on the new domain.
- Internal links are working.
- Forms, logins, and other key functions work.
- Browser cache is cleared before testing.
Old Domain Management
Option A: Keep and forward (recommended)
- Redirect all traffic from the old domain to the new domain.
- Helps preserve SEO and existing bookmarks.
- Redirect types:
- 301 Permanent Redirect (recommended for SEO)
- 302 Temporary Redirect
Option B: No forwarding
- Old domain stops working.
- Potential traffic loss and broken bookmarks.
- Possible SEO impact.
